Break up with diet culture: Throw out your scale

Are you trying to take the plunge to break free from diet culture and just keep feeling drawn back in? Well here is one thing you can do TODAY to move you in the right direction.

Throw out your scale!

I remember weighing myself every morning when I went to the bathroom. It was literally one of the first things I did with my morning. What a terrible way to start the day! I know this is all too common with many people still stuck in the dieting world. So let’s talk about why actually getting rid of the scale is so darn hard!

First off, I just want to start with saying that it is one big step to stop weighing yourself daily/weekly/monthly or at all. That is HUGE! And if that is where you are at, congratulations! It can be hard to break a habit like that because it is so easy to attach our weight to our self worth.

Once you are at this point I encourage you to take it a step further and throw out your scale. Honestly you could even destroy it!

Symbolically this device has been holding you on a leash for so long. Preventing you from eating what you want at dinner with your friends, making you feel terrible for holding a little extra water after a few drinks the night before with your partner, and adding tension to a relationship with exercise making it feel like punishment.

To start feeling confident around food, movement and gain freedom to actually enjoy your life to the fullest, having that scale in the back of your closet can be holding you back.

I read an article this this week that compared weighing yourself to playing the slot machines in Vegas. THE HOUSE ALWAYS WINS. The more you weigh yourself, the more you obsess over ‘winning,’ but it never is good enough. It is a losing game and it starts to rule over your life quickly.

Why you actually need to throw out your scale instead of just hiding it:

1. It allows you to shift your focus.

Having that scale in the back of your closet is like having it linger in the back of your mind. It can prevent you from being able to focus on how you feel and getting in tune with your body. Even if you aren’t seeing this number regularly it can still have a hold on you knowing that it’s just out of sight.

2. It can be keeping you one foot in the door back to dieting.

It can be so hard to make the decision to give up dieting for good, forever. Keeping that scale in the closet or garage or wherever is just a reason to get it out and fall down that slippery slope again. Keeping dieting as your backup plan will make it way too easy to go back to.

3. It still can have power over your self worth.

Trying to forget about that number can be even more difficult with a scale still somewhere in your house. Think about it. There were so many days that how you felt about your body was dictated by a number on that hunk of metal. It’s like a toxic ex boyfriend whose phone number you still have in your phone. A no good waste of space!

So what do you think? Are you ready to throw it out for good, or have you already?

How did you feel after ditching the scale? We would love to hear from you in the comments below!
